Buy Nothing: A Blue Bicycle, A Big Realization
Nisha had stopped by a bicycle shop. Her eight-year-old son wanted a blue bicycle with gears and a helmet. But the expensive models in the shop overwhelmed her.
She and her husband Ravi had built a good life near Boston. Both worked in IT. They believed in buying during sales to save money. Gradually, their house began to overflow—slippers, purses, books, toys, coffee makers—things were everywhere.
As Nisha was browsing, she overheard two women whispering:
"Don’t waste money on a five-year-old’s bicycle."
"You’ll definitely find one on Buy Nothing!"
Curious, Nisha asked them more. They gave her an address and said, “Meet Rebecca. She’ll tell you.”
What Is Buy Nothing?
Rebecca, a cheerful woman in her 50s, welcomed her and explained:
"Six years ago, I was broke. I began asking if people could lend me things. Once I recovered, I started this group. Now, we have over 1,000 members in this town alone."
"Need something? Ask. Someone likely has it. When done, return it. No buying necessary."
"Give what you don’t use. Take only what you need. Save money. Help the planet. Build relationships."
"Just buy personal hygiene items. Everything else? Buy Nothing."
Nisha’s First Ask
Right there, Nisha joined the Facebook group and posted: “Looking for a blue gear cycle for my son.”
Within minutes—dozens of replies, with pictures! She selected a 7-gear beauty.
People were exchanging beach chairs, toys, books, baby cribs—freely. No price tags. No arguments. Just giving.
Rebecca smiled and said:
"Learn to care about people. Love things less."
The Change
Nisha brought home the cycle. Ravi was stunned. But something had shifted. Rebecca's words echoed:
"Why accumulate so much? You won’t take it with you when you go."
She began giving away unused things. Slowly, she made new connections. She met people who felt like extended family, even so far from India.
She had begun collecting people, not possessions.
💭 Final Thought
All our lives, we collect things—even when we know we won’t take anything with us.
But what if we start collecting kindness, stories, and relationships instead?
Shall we also try the Buy Nothing way of life?
🌱 Give Something. Grow Something. Create Something. Donate Something.
Buy Nothing.
